Why Study Metaphysics: The Science of the True Self

Article By Metaphysican Gudni Gudnason

In the world today there are many choices for people who seek more in life. There is bowling, chess, quilt making, social dancing, bars, movies and many other things to spend your time on. Fun is the name of the game! These things are all good (perhaps not the bar thing), but most things such as these are innocent and at least give you temporal pleasure and satisfaction. However, inner peace is and will be lacking when your choices are as such. People look into religion and other spiritual practices and most often find these lacking as well since there is so much “control” going on in religion today.

Then we have the so-called “New Age.” There are many who claim to have and know so much and still, they do not have a foot to stand on. Indeed, they cannot bring their students to the depth of their souls and fulfill their inner needs. There are many self-proclaimed gurus around — remember Heavens Gate and Jonestown, where suicide and Kool-Aid was the answer? Many make claims, but few are actually the real thing!

Then we have Metaphysics and the true ancient lineage of esoteric and hermetic study. These have never failed their practitioners and indeed we can see that by looking at the many who followed in this lineage. People like Adam, Hermes Trismegistus, Noah, Enoch, King Salomon, Robert Bacon, Albertus Magnus, Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa, Leonardo da Vinci, Paracelsus, Nicolas Flamel, Edward Kelly, Isaac Newton, St. Germain, Rudolph Steiner, Nicola Tesla, David Bowie, Sting and many of our forefathers who had success without being famous for their work. It is a road of assured success!

The Kybalion, Chapter II

Why is Metaphysics so powerful? Why does it bring success? Let us start by seeing the whole picture for a moment: Humans are spiritual beings that have been born into this physical existence to learn from it. There are two things we can learn from that:

  1. We are an Eternal Being that is traveling through the Universe on a mission.
  2. As an Eternal Being we can therefore NEVER DIE. So fear not this life, for it is but an ILLUSION!

As such, we need to learn about this being that we are and this we can only do through Metaphysics, which is “The Science of the True Self.” Having said that, we also should take a further look at this science, what is it and how it works. Let’s break it down into easy-to-study parts:

A. Astrology: to understand one’s past – Nigredo
B. Kabbalah: to understand one’s now – Albedo
C. Hermetics: to understand one’s future – Rubedo
D. Alchemy: to transform and transmute one’s self – Rubedo
E. Healing Arts: to become whole and well – Rubedo
F. Psychicism: to know more about the Universe around us– Rubedo
G. Ritual Magick: to live correctly in this one life we have – Rubedo

When we study these things we will get a lot of questions and these questions will send us on a journey where the journey itself is as important as the answers that we might find on the way. The right answers are not always so important; moreover, the quest to find the right answer will teach you the most and indeed it is when we make mistakes that we learn the most. Mistakes are a part of this journey and are required for a passing grade. To study these sciences, one will come to a point where all things just flow and are in alignment with all things good.

So as we learn about the true self, how will that help us in this lifetime? When we learn and walk this path of service to others, we will encounter a few questions that are crucial for our development as a human. These questions are:

Who am I?

This eternal question comes up again and again and we never seem to get this one completely answered. However we do get to a point where we just one day know enough to be happy, no matter what is going on in life!

Laws of Flow

When we walk this path we learn that life has a flow to it. We tap into that flow and we can have abundance, joy, etc.

We realize soon that we are here to do service and the more service we do and the more we give to others, the more flow comes to us.

Unity – Symbiosis – Shamballa!

We realize that we are all one and that one day we must change that which is not good on this planet, and that we will be able to do that through unity of all humans. Then we can finally live in a symbiotic society!

In studying these sciences and arts we will have more peace of mind, since we learn that we are eternal and therefore can never die. We will have inner fulfillment since we are in service to humanity and doing service is the inner fulfillment that we all seek. We will have joy and happiness as we find the flow of things and we become abundant in the things we need in life to do our work. This may be the vanity of the work however these things are important since we are not here to have a spiritual experience, but rather since we are already a spirit, we are here to have a physical experience and to become victorious over this realm of existence.

The Great Work is to take the gifts that God gave us and become more than life, rise above the mediocre and become the gods and goddesses that we are meant to be. It is crucial that we understand that we are now on the threshold of a new world, a brave new world that is ready to make change. We are seeing a world of change and it is exciting. The Great Work is to transmute and transform this world into a new one, a better one where all the children of God are taken care of and kept safe. This will take unity of all humans with a symbiosis that is beyond what we see today, all species living together, all species, both human and non-human.

This is the Great Work today and this is what the Modern Mystery School is about. We stand for unity and symbiotic life on Earth. All true seekers of Light are welcome amongst us and we invite you to make a difference, like we at the Modern Mystery School are already doing.

The Alchemical Stages of Transformation

  1. Nigredo, or blackness, in alchemy means putrefaction or decomposition. The alchemists believed that as a first step in the pathway to the philosopher’s stone all alchemical ingredients had to be cleansed and cooked extensively to a uniform black matter. In psychology, Carl Jung interpreted nigredo as a moment of maximum despair, that is a prerequisite to personal development.
  2. Albedo meaning “whiteness” and follows the harrowing, chaotic nigredo. It is necessary for purification provided by the albedo which is literally referred to as ablutio; the washing away of impurities by aqua vitae.
  3. Citrinitas literally refers to “transmutation of silver into gold” or “yellowing of the lunar conscientiousness.” In alchemical philosophy, citrinitas stood for the dawning of the “solar light” inherent in one’s being.
  4. Rubedo is a Latin word meaning ‘redness’ that was adopted by 15th and 16th century alchemists to define the fourth major stage in the “alchemical opus” in achieving enlightened consciousness and the total fusion of spirit and matter.

In the framework of psychological development (especially followers of Jungian psychology) these four alchemical steps are to be taken as analogous to the process of attaining individuation: In an archetypal schema, rubedo would represent the Self archetype, and would be the culmination of the four stages. The Self manifests itself in “wholeness,” a point in which a person discovers his or her true nature.
